Human Sacrifice

Genesis Chapter 22

In this chapter YHWH requires Abraham to kill his teenage son Isaac as a human sacrifice.  YHWH is playing the “if you do this you love me” game.  YHWH has already made Abraham leave his father’s house, mutilate his genitals, and now YHWH wants a human sacrifice.  So Abraham takes his time, he waits to the next day after the request, and even on that day he spends most of it looking for wood, wouldn’t have been quicker to get the wood at the site of the human sacrifice?  But Abraham makes it the site YHWH directs in about 3 days.

They reach the sacrificial site and Abraham tells his servants to wait a distance away.  He then lies to them by telling them that he and his son will worship and then return.

Gen 22:5 “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there.  We will worship and then we will come back to you.”

On the way to the site Isaac points out that they have not sacrifice.  And like a good father who is about to kill his son in a human sacrifice, Abraham lies!  He basicly, does not have the balls to tell Isaac what is going to happen.  Yeah, this is trusting YHWH, I call bullshit right now!

Well, getting to the site, where he is alone with his son, Abraham, an ancient old 110+ year old, somehow binds Isaac a strapping young teenager to the alter?  And at just the moment that the knife is going to touch Isaac, an angel appears and tells Abraham to stop.  Finally, YHWH is satisfied that Abraham loves him.  In the end, Abraham sacrifices a ram instead of Isaac.

Here again we get the easy promise of multiply and become like the stars in the sky, the sands on the seashore.  Now that Isaac is through childhood and not been sacrificed to a blood-thirsty god, we can be certain that Abraham’s offspring will exponentially expand.  You would think that the creator of this planet would know something about ecology, and overpopulation!

The chapter ends with the news that Abraham’s brother has had 12 children.  The study notes let us know that Ishmael and later Jacob will also have 12 children.  Here comes overpopulation!
